Cryptically mottled in olive and brown with scattered turquoise flecks, perfectly camouflaged among dense coastal seagrass meadows.

與多數啃食珊瑚礁藻類的鸚哥魚不同，牠是專門以海草為食的素食專家；其齒板構造由獨立排列的牙齒組成而非完全癒合，且屬於少數終生不進行性別轉換的鸚哥魚科物種。

Unlike most parrotfishes that scrape coral rock, it is a specialized herbivore grazing primarily on seagrass leaves; it possesses non-fused teeth and is one of the few parrotfishes that does not undergo sex reversal.
