Sleek and olive-green with silvery pinstripes across its belly, darting agilely over shallow reef rubble and seagrass beds using rapid pectoral fin strokes.

Exhibits marked sexual dimorphism, with females bearing fine silver stripes on the belly while terminal males display brilliant blue-green facial ribbons; it swims primarily with flapping pectoral fins and dives directly into the sand to sleep or escape danger.
