少數偏好在白天懸浮於礁岩上方開闊水域活動的石斑魚，幼魚呈現明豔奪目的鮮黃色並帶有黑斑，隨成長會劇烈轉變為深邃優雅的灰藍色成魚體色。

Unlike many cave-dwelling groupers, it frequently hovers several meters above the reef structure during the day; juveniles are bright canary-yellow before transforming into their adult bluish coloration.
