體盤寬度遠大於長度的菱形巨翼在海沙上方緩慢振翅滑行，尾短而細，游動姿態宛如一架優雅滑翔的水下風箏。

小知識

翼展寬度可超過兩公尺，常將寬扁的身軀埋在沙地中伺機突襲獵物；不同於許多無刺的燕魟科成員，刺燕魟纖細短小的尾巴基部具有一至多根帶毒的鋸齒狀尾刺，受威脅時能向上甩尾防衛。

Unlike several stingless relatives in the butterfly ray family, it bears one or more venomous serrated spines at the base of its slender tail used for defensive strikes when threatened.
