常被稱為「西星斑」，與同屬的豹紋鰓棘鱸（東星斑）外形相似，但其藍色斑點通常較大且主要集中在頭部與體側前半部；屬於頂級珊瑚礁掠食魚類，依賴閃電般的突襲捕食獵物。

Commonly referred to as the spotted coral grouper, distinguished from its close relative the leopard coral trout by having fewer and slightly larger blue spots mostly clustered on the head and forebody; an apex ambush predator on coastal reefs.
