A dusky-brown damselfish offset by a clean, snowy-white tail, darting vigilantly through shallow coral rubble and patch reefs.

Juveniles sport a striking blue-ringed false eyespot on the soft dorsal fin that fades with adulthood; despite its small size, it aggressively defends its feeding territory against larger herbivorous grazers.
